How to Take Care of Your Garden in the Fall Season

With the changing of the seasons comes great responsibility in terms of proper garden maintenance. Now is the time to start slowly implementing the necessary changes required to keep your garden looking absolutely breathtaking this season. Keep reading for a few very useful tips on taking care of your garden in the coming months.

Plant Seasonal Flowers

Whether you’re looking to spruce up your outdoor space for the fall season or just want to plant flowers that are guaranteed to survive the cooler weather, there are plenty of colourful and stunning autumn options you can choose to adorn your lawn. From bright orange garden mums to vibrant red sumac and auburn oak leaf hydrangea, your options are endless! Not only are these plants extremely low maintenance and only require regular sunlight exposure and watering, but they’re also designed to adapt to the cooler temperatures as the fall season transforms into winter.

Rake Fallen Leaves

Raking and removing fallen leaves is an essential aspect of proper garden care in the fall because the underlying turf needs adequate sun exposure and to be able to breathe in order to thrive. Moisture that becomes trapped underneath the thick sheet of leaves can actually cause fungus to grow in your turf, which will infect any plants that you may try to grow later on. Even once all of the leaves are fallen, you need to routinely remove any excess debris or leaves that may pile up on your lawn. Neglecting to do so will result in dead grass in the spring.

Fertilize Your Lawn in the Fall

Applying a fresh layer of fertilizer to your lawn right before the first frost hits can help keep it healthy and thriving through the cold winter months, the majority of which it’ll be buried deep under the snow and ice. The nutrients that are contained in fertilizer promote healthy root growth and sustainability throughout the winter months.

Prepare for Winter

Preparing your lawn for the winter season means removing dead plants, cleaning up debris from existing plants, and sow grasses that are equipped to handle and survive the cold weather. Keep in mind that these grasses need approximately six weeks to germinate before the temperatures begin to drop, so you should do this as soon as possible.

Aerate Your Lawn

To prevent your soil from becoming compacted and hardened over time, you need to aerate it every once in a while. This can be a tedious process if you don’t have the proper tools on hand such as a core aerator. Aerating the soil basically involves creating small holes in it that allow it to breathe and absorb all of the essential nutrients that are then directly transferred to your plants. Allowing your soil to remain compacted blocks these nutrients from ever being absorbed and that means your plants will eventually become severely malnourished.

If you don’t have the time or patience to perform any of these important garden maintenance tasks yourself this fall, then it’s time to call in the lawncare experts at FOREVER GREEN LAWN & LANDSCAPE INC.
